Introduction by Jeremy Swift.

Mainly About Fishing published 30 years later than Rod and Line is more narrow in focus, dealing closely with flies and fly-tying, which were Arthur Ransome's hobby. Here he describes the evolution of his once famous ?Elver Fly? (illustrated in colour) and provides a series of notes on some of the old fly-dressers, such as the Cromwellian trooper Richard Franck, the Tweedside shoemaker John Younger, and those two immortals of the salmon fly, Kelson and Traherne, among others. There is a superb chapter on Mr Scrope, the Lincolnshire squire, author of Days and Nights of Salmon Fishing and some obscure sounding but fascinating oddments such as ?Francis Hirst as Fisherman? (inventor of a silver-bodied fly called ?Hirst's Fancy?) and ?A Note on the Vulturine Guinea fowl?.

Published when the author was in his seventies, Mainly About Fishing shows no slackening of Arthur Ransome's gift to charm his readers ? underlining once again his superior status among fishing writers.
